Design and Build Quality

The Sony WH-CH720N is designed with a clean, minimalistic design which is focused on practicality and comfort. Its over ear cushions are tender but supportive thus being suitable when having a long listening session at the work place or when commuting. The headphones are composed of strong plastic material and this makes them lightweight without affecting the sturdiness. The design of this product is lightweight and is very comfortable to wear during long periods, making it easy to wear throughout the day. The entire design is smooth and contemporary, which suits the user with the need to have a functional but stylish headset without any unnecessary adornments.

On the contrary, the Bose QuietComfort headphone is made of higher quality and sophistication. Its fine, smooth materials and cushiony ear pads help to produce the effect of luxury and these materials and ear cushions are of high quality and are very comfortable. The clamping force is just a little lighter so that even long listening or flights are comfortable and cause minimum pressure on the head and ears. The enclosed protective case also provides convenience and gives the perception of quality immediately at the point of unboxing, so, it is apparent that Bose is more concerned with design and the user experience.

Verdict:

  • Premium feel → Bose
  • Lightweight comfort → Sony

Comfort for Long Sessions

Sony WH-CH720N headphones are quite comfortable both during working days and during the lengthy listening process. The over-ear type will be easy to wear and does not exert unnecessary stress on the head, thus, easy to wear several hours at a time. The ear cushions are also soft and fit well though my ears do warm a little after long usage. This little warmth can be neglected in the context of the comfort and assistance all these headphones can provide. It is also lightweight hence less fatigue, good in all day work or in long commuting.

Bose QuietComfort headphones on the other hand are designed to be used extensively. They are characterized by a reduced clamping force and unusually pillows ear pads, which also assist to avoid the painful experience during protracted listening or flights. The breathable padding and the ergonomic headband make them especially well-suited to the users, who need to spend hours working in noisy conditions and are sure to be as comfortable as possible without compromising the quality of the sound or the noise cancellation.

Comparison of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)

Sony WH-CH720N ANC

Sony applies two noise sensors to exclude environmental sound. In daily work and commuting:

  • Lots of office gossip is minimized
  • Background and traffic noises are reduced
  • Noise cancellation is accurate and surround sound

The ANC/ambient switch is handy to activate modes rather fast.

Bose QuietComfort ANC

Bose is concerned with natural, steady ANC:

  • The softening of the mid-frequency voices is achieved successfully
  • Noise in the airplanes and travelling are minimized
  • Noise is not as violent, rather it is polished

Verdict:

  • Maximum isolation → Bose
  • Very Mid-range ANC & value Strong to Sony

Sound Quality Comparison

Sony WH-CH720N Sound

My personal review for Sony:

I must say that I think these headphones are worth the money. I still have to use the cable with a 3.5mm plug, so I like that it can be used both wired and wireless.

They are astonishing when it comes to their use on the wireless through Bluetooth. The headphones can be connected to one specific device or to two devices at the same time. To me that is such a great feature. The headphones are used in my work whereby I use them to connect to my computer but I also use the headphones in my phone.

It has the best sound that I have ever received through a set of headphones. I have never heard such accurate noise- cancelling audio. And when you do not have to cancel everything out entirely, the ambient sound mode is equally as good as the audio.

The Sony Sound Connect application that you use for these headphones has been developed to provide the best sound. Equalizer functionality allows you to adjust how you listen to whatever you are listening to by having functions such as bright, relaxed, vocal, speech and bass boost.

Sony has a powerful bass, well balanced mids and highs are clear. The EQ options render it extremely customizable to various audio formats, i.e., music, calls, podcasts or movies.

Bose QuietComfort Sound

My personal review for Bose:

I have just bought the Bose QuietComfort headphones and they are outstanding. They came in with a high quality protective case and this was a very good first impression.

Installation and connection was easy and smooth. It did not take long to download the Bose app and pair the headphones and it took just a few minutes. However, it all did as anticipated, which is the standard of quality that I have attached to Bose products.

It has a much better sound than what I have at the moment. I have been using them wirelessly on my phone and on my computer using wire and the sound in both is amazing. The sound of music is full and harmonious, the sound of the audiobooks is so clear and the words of the videos sound like a miracle.

The other significant strength is comfort. The size and fashion is ideal! I am able to wear them over long durations without experiencing any pain. The noise cancelling is very good, more so in places where there is much background noise. These make a difference to any person who could be overwhelmed by the all-time sound.

The newer version is new and therefore is currently selling at about half the price they used to and thus is even better. They are worth the money as far as music, audio books, YouTube, or phone streaming is concerned.

Honestly, there is nothing that I dislike about such headphones. I would highly recommend them. Bose has a more acoustic, refined sound. Vocals are sharp, control of bass and sound overall is refined. It is fantastic to make work-calls, listen to audiobooks and listen all day long.

Multipoint and Wireless Connection

Sony WH-CH720N is multipoint Bluetooth:

  • Connect to two or one device at a time
  • Fuss-free transition between phone and computer
  • Wired 3.5mm option for backup

Bose QuietComfort also has multipoint that are reliable and help. The two headphones are flexible in terms of work, traveling and recreation.

Battery Life Comparison

  • Sony WH-CH720N → Up to 35 hours
  •  Bose QuietComfort → 24 hours and beyond

Sony is obviously superior to Bose when it comes to the long-duration use. Sony has an ample battery even after a working day. Bose can do well, but Sony has a better chance of survival.

Controls and Usability

The Sony WH-CH720N has a convenient and user-friendly control system and it is not complicated to change the volume, control the playback and change the noise-cancelling or ambient mode. The independent volume controls are easy to label and give a tactile warning not to change the volume accidentally when on calls or listening to music. The only disadvantage is that the play/ pause button is in between the volume controls such that sometimes, one mis-presses it when changing the sound levels. Although this is a minor issue, the general layout of the controls is feasible and effective to operate thus allowing smooth interaction without the need to use the app at all times.

Responsive and well derived easy-to-navigate buttons are also a feature of the Bose QuietComfort headphones. The controls are smooth with well defined functions by which the volume, playback, ANC and call functions can be controlled. The headphones allow the user to use them in work, commuting and travel situations where they need to have quick access and have to be reliable at all times without always looking at the buttons. The 2 models have similar focus on convenience, though Bose has a slight advantage in the ergonomics of the button placement, whereas Sony has a bigger advantage in the adaptable nature of control.

Impedance Differences

  • Sony WH-CH720N: 325 Ohms
  • Bose QuietComfort: 32 Ohms

When using wires, higher impedance will consume more power whereas both are mainly wireless, so that would not have an impact on normal users.

Microphone and Calls

The Sony WH-CH720N is reliable in the case of office calls and virtual meetings. The microphone that is inbuilt captures voice well in normal home or office settings and is thus a strong choice when holding a video conference, a phone call or an online class. Although the ANC capabilities of the headphones cut down the noise in the background, in some instances of very noisy environments, voice clarity is sometimes compromised.

The Bose QuietComfort, however, is marginally better than Sony in difficult environments. However, its high quality microphone system and better noise cancelling makes sure that your voice is better captured, even at high noise levels like when in a busy coffee shop, open office or when travelling. This is what makes Bose very attractive to professionals who often make calls under different conditions. On the whole, both types of headphones are very good in supporting daily call requirements, but Bose has a significant advantage in terms of isolating your voice against the environmental noise to maintain a consistently clear conversation.

Value for Money

Sony WH-CH720N: A great product with adjustable sound and great ANC and a long battery life. Sony WH-CH720N offers an ideal feature and price combination. Its sound is customizable with the Sony Sound connect app, with various equalizer settings such as bright, vocal, bass boost and others. The noise cancellation of the headphones is also reliable and quite efficient in background noise minimization at work or travelling. They are perfect- they can last up to 35 hours of battery life and you need not fear having to charge your batteries every other few hours. In sum, Sony provides a sensible, high-quality variant that should be used every day, during long listening periods and targeted at buyers with a limited quantity of money.

Bose QuietComfort: Full refined sound, regular ANC and high quality build. Bose concentrates on the great listening experience, which entails soft ear cushions, fine balance of sound and a very stable noise cancellation. It is more expensive, but the quality of the construction, comfort and sound quality are worth the high price.

  • Budget-conscious → Sony
